The doubles team of Will Loux and Brannon Johnson of Pella High picked up one more win in day two of the boys Class 1-A Individual State Tennis Meet to earn a sixth place finish overall.  The duo cruised past a team from Aplington-Parkersburg 6-2, 6-2 to set up a contest for fifth place with the tournament’s second-seeded team, Boone.
That match-up proved to be a tall task for Loux and Johnson, as they fell 6-0, 6-2 to conclude their run in the tournament.  Pella Tennis Coach Nick Seipel said the tandem saved their best tennis for last, closing out the season in strong fashion.
“Will hit rock solid deep return of serves, and Brannon showed good hands at net.  This was the best I’ve ever seen them directionally serve, allowing them easy points exposing weaker backhands.  They played clean tennis, keeping the unforced errors down to a minimum, a must if you want to see day two at State Tennis,” said Seipel.
“They also executed a smart tactical doubles game plan, putting the ball at their opponents feet forcing them to hit upward and defensively.  We made it to the second day of competition and finished 6th, a great result to cap off a good season.”
The members of the Little Dutch tennis squad had dropped their first match of the tournament, but battled back through the consolation bracket, winning three straight matches before falling to Boone.
