The Department of Natural Resources and City of Knoxville report that the city of Knoxville bypassed thousands of gallons of partially treated wastewater into Compentine Creek Monday. This occurred after a lightning strike shut down power at the wastewater treatment plant around 1 pm. Typically in this scenario, the water would flow into basin designed to store excess flow, but the basin was already full as a result of the heavy rains last week. As a result, the city of Knoxville discharged 6000 gallons per minute of partially treated wastewater. Compentine Creek, where the water was discharged, flows into Lake Red Rock. Power was restored to the wastewater plant at around 3 pm.
