The Marion County Sheriff’s Office was faced with an unusual situation on Thursday morning. At close to 10 am Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office received a call about an abandoned semi on the south end of 228th St. south of Pella, in the area where the Dingeman’s Sand Plant used to be. Sheriff Ron Goemaat tells KNIA/KRLS News that the trucking company that owned the semi was contacted, and the company told the Sheriff’s Office that the truck was supposed to be on a delivery far from Pella. Goemaat says they became concerned that the driver may have fallen into the Des Moines River, since it was only about 100 feet from the truck. They conducted a search of the area, and Goemaat says that Deputy Chief Troy Fisher and Reserve Deputy Steve McCombs found the driver floating on a log down the river. Goemaat says the man wouldn’t say much except that he felt like floating on a log. Goemaat says there are no indications drugs or alcohol was involved. No charges were filed, as the man had done nothing illegal. He was put in a motel for the night. The trucking company asked that he not be allowed to continue driving their truck.
