The idea of a ten cent raise on the road use gas tax has been discussed at the Governor’s Transportation 2020 Citizen’s Advisory Commission’s meetings throughout the state. Marion County Engineer Roger Schletzbaum says that the road use gas tax is the primary source of funding for roads departments, but the cost of maintaining roads is outpacing the financial resources available. He says part of the reason is vehicles today can have much better gas mileage than in the past. They have the ability to drive more miles on roads, while paying about the same tax per gallon of fuel as they did 20 years ago.
