For the first ten minutes Saturday afternoon, it looked like déjà-vu all over again for the Central College football team, but the Dutch turned it around and overcame Augustana 31-23.

The Vikings drove 78 yards for an opening touchdown, and Central turned the ball over on its first possession. Dutch safety Ryan Schmidt turned the tide, however, with an interception that led to an 8-yard TD pass from Nate Snead to Brett Wilkin. After an Augustana field goal, Snead ran it in from three-yards out to give the Dutch a lead they would never relinquish.

Snead hit younger brother Jeremy on a sparkling 64 yard catch-and-run touchdown early in the second half, and it was 24-16 Central after freshman kicker Kevin Sheldon nailed a 37-yard field goal. On the ensuing Augustana drive, the Vikings were driving for the tie, when Dutch cornerback Kevin Petz picked off a David Lee pass and ran it down to the 3-yard line. Three plays later, Central’s Ross Doehrmann plowed forward for a four-yard touchdown, giving the Dutch a 31-16 lead, and a very late Augustana touchdown made the final score 31-23.

Central is now 1-1 on the season, and will open Iowa Conference action next Saturday at home against Luther. Join us tonight night live at Applebee’s as Dutch Coach Jeff McMartin joins us from 7:00-7:30 for the Central College Radio Coaches Corner. We’ll look back at Saturday’s win over the Vikings, as well as the upcoming game against the Norse. The show will air live on 92.1 fm KRLS and at kniakrls.com
