The Monday after Thanksgiving is known as Cyber Monday. It’s considered to be the biggest online shopping day of the year. But shopping online can actually hurt not just local businesses, but also local schools and communities. Tresa Mott, owner of The Next Chapter in Knoxville, says that the sales tax that they pay goes to help out the school district, and, in turn, the city. Online retailers such as Amazon don’t have to pay that local sales tax money. The Knoxville School District is planning on using local sales tax dollars that they receive to help pay for a brand new auditorium at the high school.
