Though the cold winter weather is well underway, blooming flowers can still bring beauty to your home through the practice of forcing bulbs. To force a bulb means to encourage blooming out of season. Karen Ackley, with the Marion County Extension Office, says that to force your own bulb, put your plant in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks before bringing them out to let them grow. All sorts of bulbs can be forced, including daffodils, paper whites, and tulips. Ackley says that the scents and colors can brighten up households during the cold winter season.
