Senator Chuck Grassley introduced legislation in the US Senate last week that would put a limit on farm payments in an effort to protect small and medium-sized farms. The bill sets a $150,000 limit on marketing loan gains, and also limits safety-net payments. Grassley says that something is wrong when seventy percent of farm payments go to just ten percent of farmers. By setting a cap the amount a farmer can receive, Grassley hopes to see those payments spread to small and medium-sized farms. The legislation is bi-partisan, with Democratic Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota also a co-sponsor of the bill.
