The mild winter has led to some people getting an early start on planting crops, but Marion County Extension Office Program Director Dale Miller says not everyone has decided go ahead yet. Miller says that with marginal soil temperatures and cooler weather in the upcoming weeks, many farmers held off on planting for a little bit longer. He notes that Saturday’s storms would have had little to no effect on any corn that’s already in the ground, but it did impact alfalfa. Miller says hay had really taken off well this spring, but the combination of frost last week and hail damage in the southern part of the county could lead to possibilities of diseased alfalfa later this season.
