The remains of Swan soldier who was killed in combat in the Korean War are returning home. Edris “Eddie” Viers was 32-years-old in August 1950 when his U.S. Army Unit became engaged with North Korean forces in what became known as the Battle of Bloody Gulch. Enemy forces overran the Field Artillery Battalion for which he was serving, inflicting heavy causalities on U.S. Forces.
Viers was officially declared deceased in 1953, but his remains were never recovered. A set of unknown remains at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii were exhumed last year for re-analysis. Those remains were identified as those of Viers late last year, and the U.S. Army notified the surviving members of Viers’ family.
A visitation will be held next Friday at 11am at the Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville, which will be followed by a memorial services at noon. A graveside services with full military honors will immediately follow the memorial service at the Swan Cemetery, where Viers will finally be laid to rest at home.
