The remains of Sergeant First Class Edris “Eddie” Viers are now in Pleasantville after they were flown into Des Moines yesterday afternoon. Viers was a Korean War soldier from Swan who died in combat. His remains were unidentified until last year, when they were exhumed from a military cemetery in Hawai’i and reanalyzed. In a show of respect for Viers, his remains were escorted to Pleasantville by members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Des Moines Police Department, and the Patriot Guard Riders. His memorial service is scheduled for noon on Friday at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville with visitation scheduled for 11am. Graveside services with military honors accorded by the United States Army will occur immediately afterward at the Swan Cemetery.
