As our lives become more plugged in, the Iowa Department of Public Health and Live Healthy Iowa are encouraging all Iowans to find new means of entertainment. Screen-Free Week, formally known as Television Turnoff Week, runs until May 6th. Diane Ellis at Marion County Public Health says that even with the busy lives everyone has, it’s important to take time to get out from in front of TV, computer, and iPad screens and instead find some time for physical activity. Ellis says that going for a walk, playing catch, or even letting kids play in mud puddles is a great way to encourage children to do something different. Ellis notes that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends to screen time for children under 2 years old and less than two hours a day for older children.
