The Knoxville Fire and Rescue Department looked at and tested six different ambulances Wednesday night. They’re in the process of purchasing an ambulance after having a third ambulance approved in this year’s budget. Interim Fire Chief Greg Higginbotham says that they continue to be at or near pace for a record-number of runs this year. He notes that since they do many transfers out-of-town as well, they often have both of their current ambulances being used. He said that Wednesday night went well. Members of the department got to test drive the ambulances and look at their features. Higginbotham says that not only is it a chance to explore different options, but it also lets the companies know that they are in competition, which may sweeten the deal. Higginbotham says that members of the department have made comments, and now the committee deciding the purchase is meeting this week. He adds that once they negotiate a purchase, it’ll take up to 90 days to receive the vehicle.
