A mine reclamation project in Marion County is being helped by a grant from the Office of Surface Mining. There will be a public field day at the Goff Mine on June 13th so that project partners can showcase what they’ve accomplished. The grant, worth 100,000 dollars, is helping to restore an area that had been an environmental calamity, according to Marion County Soil and Water Commissioner Jack Bensink. About 180 acres of land that previously could not support vegetation have been reclaimed, including 60 acres in this final phase. Overall in Iowa, there are more than 230 unreclaimed mines affecting 12,000-13,000 acres.
