Pella High School’s outstanding distance runner Zach Buchheit will continue his career at the Division I collegiate level. Last week the recent graduate signed a letter of intent to run cross country for the University of Northern Iowa.

“Finally knowing where I’m going next fall is relieving, in some sense. UNI is a great school, and I’ve become really acquainted with the school over the years, and my family and quite a few friends will be up there, so it makes the transition a little more exciting,” said Buchheit.

“Coach [Dave] Paulsen is a great guy. He used to be here at Central [College] and just knowing that he’s a guy that’s very skillful in what he’s done and has been a successful runner as well is comforting. Knowing that they’re having success with the program also helps, in that sense.”

Zach Buchheit closed out a storied running career at Pella High by finishing first at the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet and leading the Little Dutch to the team title this fall; then added a state title in the 3200 Meters and a runner-up finish in the 1600 Meter Run at the State Track and Field Championships this spring.
