The landfill fire in Iowa City is expected to continue to burn for the rest of the week. The South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency says there are some things people can do to prevent such incidents. Director Sara Bixby says the Iowa City fire most likely started after hot ashes burned through debris and into the liner of rubber tires. She says if you’re burning debris, wait for the ashes to cool before bringing it to the landfill. Bixby notes they have had times where they’ve called out the fire department to put out a fire at their landfill. She adds that a large fire the size of Iowa City’s is less likely to occur in Marion County because of the material they use for liners. Where the Iowa City landfill uses rubber tires, Bixby says they use sand.
