John Bermel, a 1984 Central College graduate, has qualified for the U.S. Senior Open Men’s Golf Tournament. He qualified with a 1-under-par 72 at Big Foot Country Club in Fontana, Wisconsin this past Tuesday. He then survived a three-man, six-hole sudden-death playoff for the berth.

Bermel, who now serves as head golf professional at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls and men’s and women’s golf coach at the University of Northern Iowa, will be playing in his third major. He played in the 1994 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the 1996 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. He’ll be making his senior tourney debut, turning 50 on July 8.

The U.S. Senior Open Men’s Golf Tournament takes place July 12-15 at the Indianwood Country Club in Lake Orion, Michigan.
