The Knoxville City Council unanimously denied the Knoxville School District’s request for an exemption from franchise fees during their regular meeting yesterday evening. Members of the Council said they didn’t want to create a precedent, noting that the School District uses city services just as other businesses do. The decision means the school district needs to come up with about 15,000 additional dollars in their budget, which business manager Craig Mobley says will likely have to come from raising property taxes. That figure could increase if the City Council passes a franchise fee agreement with Alliant Energy. A public hearing was held on that measure last night, with two residents speaking out against the franchise fee. The Council did not hold a vote on that ordinance last night as it was not ready.
