A Fire on Saturday destroyed two buildings on a farm south of Leighton. The fire burned two small barns to the ground, and was at risk of lighting a grain silo on fire as well. Smoke could be seen as far away as Pella before the Pella Fire Department was able to take control of the fire. The fire began when a scrapper was cutting steel, which Chief Doug Van Gorkom says is dangerous on hot, dry days like saturday. The Pella Ambulance, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and Oskaloosa Fire Department responded to the scene as well.
