People looking to get rid of TVs may be having some trouble as stores like Goodwill have stopped accepting them. South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency director Sarah Bixby says that county residents are welcome to bring TVs and other high-tech electronics to their landfill in Tracy. She says that there’s a small fee, but this ensures they are disposed of properly. She adds that there can be up to eight pounds of lead in some of these screens; electronics that are disposed in ways that are improper, such as being thrown in ditches, pose health hazards to the general public. Bixby notes the lead can get into groundwater and contaminate it.
As a reminder, the Agency is also holding a household chemical dropoff in Knoxville this Saturday from 9am to noon at the Knoxville Street Shop.
