The Knoxville Fire Department is being remodeled. Interim Fire Chief Greg Higginbotham says that the main room will soon be repainted and new cabinets, shelves, and counter tops will be installed on the perimeter of the room.
The floor and ceiling, which are from the original building, will also be replaced. Higginbotham adds that the department has built in bunk beds for people on a 24-hour shift and the mattresses will be coming soon. Previously, they have been using the couches in the main room of the department.
Finally, Higginbotham says they’ve been slowly building up a workout area in the back. The space has a treadmill, elliptical, and some free weights and weight machines. Much of that equipment, Higginbotham says, was donated by the Knoxville Recreation Center.
