A program on the history of Buxton, Iowa will be held next week near Bussey. Buxton was a coal mining community located just a few miles southeast of Hamilton in Monroe County. At the turn of the 20th century, Buxton had a population between 8000 and 10,000 people, including quite a large African-American population that was not overtly segregated. The town died in the 1920s as the coal mines shut down.
Connie Van Polen will be sharing a program entitled The Many Colors of Buxton at Union Liberty Church next Tuesday at 7pm. It will feature historical information and a question and answer period. Union Liberty Church is located on 325th Street, southeast of Bussey.
