This week is Free Speech week, but how has freedom of speech changed with technology? Ben Allen, a Professor of Communication at Central College says that technology has connected cultures around the world, and all of those cultures have different ideas of free speech. In the United States, Allen says we don’t prevent an idea from being put out to the public, but it can face consequences afterward. The burden falls on the recipient of an idea, who can choose to ignore the message if they are offended, but its not the same in other countries. This can lead to conflict between different cultures. Overall, Allen says the internet have benefited free speech, although it means people need to be more vigilant when looking for accurate information.
