The Central men’s and women’s basketball teams played in games on Saturday that were decided in the final seconds, and unfortunately for both squads, they went the way of the visitors. The women went on a 20 – 4 run towards the end of the second half, but couldn’t hold onto a nine point halftime lead and fell to Waldorf, 65 – 64. Central trailed by one with less than a minute to play, when Nicole Strasko powered her Dutch team ahead by drawing a late foul and bucketing two free throws to give Central a one point lead. However, the Warriors’ Goli Tavassoli drove to the lane and drew a foul with 0.6 seconds left and made both free throws to give her team the lead back and the win. The Central Dutch men seemed disoriented on the defensive side of the ball, not getting back in transition and committing several fouls in a 92 – 88 overtime loss to Iowa Wesleyan. Branden Stubbs had a team-high 23 points while Nick Marinkovich and Matt Greenfield each added 17. Central men’s head coach, Craig Douma, told KNIA/KRLS Sports that he was not pleased at all by the effort his guys showed on the court. The losses drop the women’s record to 3 – 3 on the year while the men fall to 4 – 2, as each team failed to record a win in their games last week. Each team will try and bounce back in this coming week, as the men travel to Crown later today, and the women will wait for the men to return to join forces in a men’s/women’s doubleheader against AIB on Wednesday.
