A blizzard warning is in effect for Marion County through 6pm today. The National Weather Service says winds will gradually increase throughout the day, sustaining at around 30-to-40 miles per hour. Gusts could reach over 50 miles per hour – combined with constant snowfall and blowing snow, and we’ll see whiteout conditions throughout the day. 6-to-14 inches of snow is expected by this afternoon. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says area roadways are 100% snow and ice covered and a tow ban is now in effect. Drifting snow may also presents a travel obstacle. The Sheriff’s office also urges caution when traveling on the mile long bridge and the dam as wind gusts are approaching 40mph. The Iowa Department of Transportation says that travel is not advised through much of the state. City, county and state plows are in operation. The Knoxville, Pella, and Pleasantville snow ordinances are in effect. Mid-American energy reports that nearly 100 homes are without power in the Marion County, and over 300 in Jasper County. 30 Thousand are without power in the state.
