The Pella Christian basketball teams are on a roll, and don’t stop them now. Just last night, the Eagles went on the road and swept conference opponent Grinnell for the school’s third straight doubleheader sweep. Lauren Jungling scored all 12 of her points in the first quarter on four long-balls to give her team a 17 – 7 lead. Grinnell would play scrappy ball the rest of the way and had it down to three at one point, but the Eagles pulled away late and won 49 – 37. Cori Uitermarkt led all scorers with 20 points. After the game, Coach Kevin Van Maanen said that despite only scoring four points in the final eight minutes, his team’s defense really stepped up to get the job done.

The victory is the tenth on the season for the Eagles’ girls, who are in first place in the Little Hawkeye Conference with a 5 – 1 record. The boys’ game was a little closer, but the Eagles ended up on top 53 – 42. Their aggressive style against the Tigers led to five “and-one” opportunities, three of them coming from Sebastian Baugh, who finished with 13, while both Riley Stursma and Austin Ver Meer had 14 points each. The Eagles’ boys are now 9 – 4 overall and 5 – 1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The two teams will split up momentarily, with the boys playing at home against Gilbert on Thursday, and then joining back up with the girls this Tuesday to play Newton at home.
