Elementary school students in Knoxville were rewarded with some treats and fun recently after performing well in the annual spell-a-thon. The spell-a-thon is a fundraiser for the Knoxville PTO; family and friends pledge a certain amount of money for each word a student spells correctly at an end-of-year test. Both Northstar and West received ice cream socials after scoring at least 88 percent as a school; more than 93 percent of West students had perfect tests – meaning that Principal Mike Montgomery’s hair was dyed pink.
PTO president Dave Garcia says this year’s spell-a-thon brought in more than $11,200 for the PTO. He says that money goes straight back into the schools to help supplement technology, pay for field trips, and more.
