The dog days of summer are upon us, with highs expected to reach the 90s today and heat index values as high as 100. Judi Van Hulzen, with Marion County Public Health, says that dehydration can be a major factor in this weather. If you’re out doing work or playing in the sun, Van Hulzen says to be sure to take breaks and get in the shade. She suggests that you either drink water or something with electrolytes like Gatorade or fruit juices to keep you hydrated. She says leg cramps is a big sign of dehydration, and is confusion. If any of those symptoms don’t improve after you get into the shade, she says it’s time to go to the doctor to prevent heat stroke.
