70 percent of children who die from unintentional household injuries are four or younger. That’s why Diane Ellis, with Marion County Public Health, says it’s important to begin childproofing your home before you bring a newborn home. Ellis says some simple ways to begin are putting plates in unused electrical outlets and putting gates up around stairs. She says you should also either lock cabinets with dangerous items or put them somewhere a child can’t get too. Ellis adds that safety standards for cribs are always changing, so it’s important to know the latest there. Ellis says if you have questions, they have specialists at Public Health that can help you work through issues.
