The City of Knoxville is reporting that citizens have responded well to inspections regarding sources of infiltration and inflow into sanitary sewer systems. Assistant City Manager Dylan Feik says that of the 302 letters sent out to homeowners, 225 have completed inspections. He calls this wonderful progress and says the City sincerely thanks property owners for helping with the efforts. The inspections come as the City tries to eliminate infiltration of stormwater into sewer systems. This lessens the amount of sewer water being treated, which would lower the scope and cost of a new water reclamation facility that will have to be built in about ten years. If city inspectors find a source of infiltration, they work with the homeowner to fine a way to remove it. The city also has a program to help subsidize the cost of fixing such a problem. Since the beginning of the year, the City has provided more than $2500 to six property owners. You can learn more about the program at the City’s website.
