A Hike to Help Refugees, originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed until Spring. The hike was scheduled to take place at Lake Red Rock’s Fifield Recreation Area, but as it is federal property, it has been closed due to the partial government shutdown. Michelle Stewart, with the Central Volunteer Center, says that there were also a few refugee organizations from the Des Moines area that discovered that they could not attend at the last minute because they were understaffed due to the shutdown. Stewart continues to say that they have decided to move the event to the spring in the hopes that they may utilize Fifield and the trails at Red Rock, as well as have more participation from the refugee organizations.
