WeatherEye Meteorologist Greg Tatro says the cold we are experiencing in Iowa is something meteorologists call a polar vortex, which is a very cold high pressure system moving in from Canada. He says from Sunday night to Monday, actual air temps will likely be in the 10 to 15 below range, wind chills could push 40 to 50 below and forecasted highs maybe no higher than 6 below. Tatro says it’s been about a decade since we have seen temperatures this cold. He says likely we will have colder than normal temperatures all winter, with about average precipitation.
