David Hoke, Vice President of Marketing at Iowa State Savings Bank in Knoxville, says despite recent account breaches at well-known retailers, payment via debit card is still the way to go. Hoke says that their debit card vendor is SHAZAM, and they have a program called Falcon that monitors debit card activity. If there is an unusual transaction on the card, for example if there is a transaction that occurs in a foreign country or outside their typical spending activity, Shazam will contact the customer on the bank’s behalf to determine if it was legitimate activity. Hoke says that is a 24/7 safety net, and if the customer indicates it is possibly fraud, the card will be deactivated right then, to prevent further fraudulent activity, and the card will be replaced.
