It’s the Iowa version of “Beatlemania,” the 2014 state wrestling tournament is fully underway, and Thursday’s “Day One” was very eventful for our local grapplers. Knoxville’s Kieran Robuck pinned Joey Huntington in the second period to advance to round two later today against Cody Naber of Beckman Catholic. Brock Caviness, who was able to wrestle at state due to an injury in Wednesday’s State Team Dual event, lost both of his matches and made a quick exit. Pella High’s Levi Azinger won with a 6 – 0 decision over Mac Southard of Lewis Central and will wrestle Keegan Shaw of Southeast Warren this afternoon. Chase Petty had the match of the night of our local wrestlers; down 5 – 4 after an escape with less than 30 seconds on the clock, Petty and Jonah Williams of Southeast Polk restarted the match from neutral position with five seconds left. Petty gave it everything he had and scored two points on a take down as the final seconds ticked off the clock to give him a 6 – 5 win. After the match, Petty walked us through those final moments. He’ll wrestle Bryce Meyer of Fort Madison today in the second round. Head coach Joe Burch says that they spent the rest of the night getting ready mentally for Day Two. For PCM, Tristan Clark did lose his first round match, but rebounded nicely with a fall at 1:59 over Duece Phaly in the consolation bracket. Clark is back in action later today with an opponent to be determined.
