Knoxville Fire and Rescue will assist the Grand Theater Foundation with demolition inside the building today. Chief Jim Mitchell tells KNIA KRLS News that his staff will practice what is called an overhaul, which is looking for hidden fires within walls, primarily in older homes that have plaster and lathe walls. He says the unique part about this training exercise is that the lathe in the theater walls is metal rather than wood, which he’s never seen before. He says crews will take ladders in and open up the walls of the theater, which will help the foundation with demolition, and fire crews will get practice they need as well.
