In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month.” President Jimmy Carter then designated May as “Older Americans Month” in 1980. Amy Robbins is a Social Worker with Marion County Public Health and tells KNIA KRLS News that this year, the theme is “Safety Today, Healthy Tomorrows.” She says the focus is on injury prevention, protecting against scams and predators, and safety in the home. Robbins says Public Health provides services, support and resources year round, but wants to raise awareness of the issue by recognizing the importance of this designation.
