New parents often experience a difficult phase with newborn babies, known as the period of PURPLE crying. This is a period of unexpected crying, that peaks between 2 and 5 months, in which babies may appear to be in pain and resist soothing. Babies can cry for up to 5 hours a day and many times it occurs in the evening. Pam Bettger, Prevention Specialist with Crossroads of Pella, says it is completely normal, and it is normal – and ok – to feel frustrated. She encourages caregivers to seek help if it becomes too much, or if you feel like you might harm your baby. On Tuesday evening from 6 to 8, at the Knoxville Public Library, Bettger will host an education session for caregivers, to talk about this phenomenon; and caregivers will receive a free baby monitor as well. There will be a follow up session in Pella, on May 22 at the Pella Public Library, from 6-8.
