Four Newton runs in the first inning were a little too much for Knoxville Baseball to overcome last night as the Panthers fell to the Cardinals 6-4. Knoxville would respond in the bottom of the first with two runs as Ross Shelford reached on an error that brought one run home and Bryce Zoutte’s R-B-I single to bring the other run home to make it 4-2. The score would stay that way until the fifth when Newton plated a run to make it 5-2. However, Knoxville would battle back to make it 5-4 when pinch hitter D.J. Snyder slapped an R-B-I single after Calyn Bumgardner came home on a wild pitch. Newton would plate an insurance run in the seventh, but Knoxville had bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but could not bring any runs home. Panthers Coach Joel Johnson told KNIA/KRLS Sports his team just was not as fortunate as Newton was. Kevin Woodhouse was tagged with the loss going six plus inning giving up five runs on 11 hits walking two and striking out two. Knoxville is now 6-5 on the season and will travel to Des Moines today to take on Chariton in Principal Park. You can hear the game live on AM 1320 and 95.3 KNIA with Derek Cardwell at 12:45.
