The PCM softball team has proven this season that you don’t have to be ranked to be a dangerous squad to face. This Monday, for the second straight postseason contest, the Mustangs will have to take down a ranked team, but with a trip to the Class 3A state tournament on the line. Their opponent is West Burlington – Notre Dame, and for the most part, the two teams are very even. The Nikes have the edge in batting, as they are hitting .340 as a team on the year, with 47 doubles, four triples, and 11 home runs. They also walk more and strikeout less than the Mustangs do. Pitching is in favor of PCM; the Mustangs have a 1.70 ERA, and opponents bat just .151 against them this year. The Nikes do strikeout a lot of batters, 77 more than PCM, in fact. Coach Whitney Plein (Pleen) says it hasn’t been just one person that has gotten her team to this point. Monday’s regional final will be held in Ottumwa and is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
