Pleasantville Emergency Services responded to a weekend fire that destroyed a room on the second level of a home.

Pleasantville Fire Chief Jordan Van Ness says his crew was called to a residence at the corner of West Broadway and State Streets at 2:11am Saturday morning.

Van Ness believes the fire was likely electrical in nature. He says the occupants of the home had a small fire earlier in the evening. It happened with what was believed-to-be a short in a heating blanket in a second-level bedroom and was put out with a personal fire extinguisher. The residents took the contents of the bed that was burned and placed them outside and then ran a fan to get the order of smoke out of the bedroom while they slept downstairs.

Later in the evening, the couple was awaken to the smell of smoke emanating from the upper level. It’s believed the source of the second fire was the fan. Van Ness says the fire was contained to the one room, but significant damage has left the home uninhabitable at this time.

The couple and a child who were home at the time of the fire all escaped unharmed.
