Cold weather can increase the potential for house fires.

Knoxville City Fire Chief Jim Mitchell says many fires in the winter occur when furnaces, wood stoves, and fireplaces are not properly cleaned. He recommends furnace filters be changed so they don’t get clogged with dust that can impede performance. Chimneys should also be swept to avoid becoming a fire hazard.
