A long time fixture in Pella emergency response is retiring at the end of the month.
After 30 years as Director of Pella Ambulance, Doug Polking is ending his career on December 31st. Polking says that he’s fond of the many memories he’s made over the years, and says he’ll miss being around the dedicated volunteers at Pella Ambulance.
“A lot of things have changed in EMS, technology has influenced it dramatically. But the one thing that has been constant and really makes Pella Ambulance very strong and successful, is the fact that I’ve had the privilege to work with wonderful people,” Polking says. “I get paid for this, but it’s never been a job for me. It’s a passion.”
Polking says that he’s thankful to have received a spot in the Iowa EMT Hall of Fame and from the Marion County Emergency Response Association, but adds he’s even more grateful from the kind words he’s received in letters from area residents.
“It’s very heartwarming to know that people have recognized the commitment this organization has had to the community and the impact we’ve had in the last 30-plus years,” Polking says.
A special open house will be held on Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Pella Community Ambulance Station on Main Street in his honor.
