Central graduate and former men’s tennis player, Kyle Freischlag, has been named a finalist for the 2013-14 Duane Schroeder Iowa Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Freischlag graduated earlier this year with a GPA of 3.86 with a major in history and biology and a Spanish minor. The award is given to a student-athlete who demonstrates high levels of accomplishment and achievement in athletics and academics while serving the community at the same time. Nominees must have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA to be considered for the award. Freischlag earned four letters during his time at Central, and was the number one singles and doubles player his junior season before an injury caused him to miss much of his senior season. The Dutch alum also logged more than 300 hours of community service as a member of the Iowa College AmeriCorps Program, volunteering as a hospice caregiver at the Comfort House in Pella. If Freischlag wins, he would be the fifth Central student-athlete to receive the award in its 14-year history.
