Jazz band performers from area schools will have a day to learn from one of the country’s best jazz musicians today.
The 36th annual Jazzmania is set to take place at Central College, which includes a workshop for students throughout the day that culminates with an evening concert. Associate Professor Gabriel Espinosa says the show is highlighted by Grammy Award-winning double-bassist Ron Carter, who has collaborated on hundreds of albums with some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians. He says members of the Pella, Knoxville, and North Mahaska jazz bands will be in attendance to learn from Carter, who was also featured last year at Jazzmania. The Central jazz band will perform in the evening’s concert alongside Carter at 7:30 p.m. in the Douwstra Auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door.
