It was the closest game they played since edging Grinnell a month ago, 64 – 56, but Pella High found a way to end up on top of a furious Chariton charge in Thursday’s district final. Coach Mark Core has a vast arsenal of weapons he can turn to off the bench that can shoot the ball from just about anywhere on the court, to go along with an even-harder working effort and intensity on the defensive side of the ball. One player in particular came up big for the Little Dutch the other night, and that was Ryan Van Wyk. The sophomore, who came in as the team’s third highest scorer this season, didn’t even attempt a shot in the first half. Core says there may have been a reason to why Van Wyk exploded for 16 points in the final two periods to help the team earn the victory. A difficult task is ahead for Pella, as they will take on Norwalk for the third time this year on Monday night at Southeast Polk in the substate final.
