Demolition on a crippled Marion County building in downtown Knoxville will begin this week, once final documentation is acquired, after the Board of Supervisors gave their authorization Tuesday.
Marion County Maintenance Director Cal Stephens says a certificate from the structural engineer is still needed and expected at any time. Marion County Attorney Ed Bull says the certificate is required so that an emergency declaration can be made by the county, allowing them to act without public bidding procedures.
Two bids have been received on the project. Stephens says they’re ready to go at anytime.
Stephens also says a small amount of asbestos was discovered in the back of the building, located at 113 & 115 Third Street, and must be removed.
