The winds were blowing out and so were the baseball in Waverly on Saturday, as Wartburg clobbered seven home runs en route to their sweep over Central. The Dutch found themselves in 4 – 0 holes after the first inning of both games, each thanks to a pair of long balls off the bat of DJ Utley. The Knight first baseman hit a three-run shot in the opener and a grand slam in the nightcap, and connected on four total for the doubleheader, three in game two, which ties a school record. Central fell 14 – 3 and 11 – 8 in the two games. They were down 8 – 1 and 9 – 2 in that second game, and climbed back to within a run going into the bottom of the eighth, before back-to-back homers sucked any kind of momentum the Dutch had built. Zach Brown led the now 5 – 10 Dutch with a 4-for-7 day at the plate. Central is 1 – 3 to begin Iowa Conference play, and they’ll have a quick turnaround with a doubleheader at Simpson on Tuesday.
