Under a bill introduced by the Iowa House, school start dates would be allowed to begin no sooner than August 23rd.

District 28 State Representative Greg Heartsill says this is a compromise of two extremes: those looking to allow schools to have complete local control and start as early as July 1st and those who want to stick with the current law, which starts September 1st or later.
Heartsill says he’s in favor of the compromise because it will also allow schools to apply for a waiver, giving them more flexibility.
