In their closest decision of the year up to this point, Pella Christian’s softball team eked out a 2 – 1 win over Newton last night in their Little Hawkeye Conference opener. Emma Schnell once again pitched a beauty, going the full seven, giving up just two hits and striking out 15 Cardinals. Both of the Eagles’ runs came in the fifth, when Abby Pleima sacrificed two runners into scoring position, followed by a passed ball and a Brooke Mitrisin double. Eagles’ baseball fell 7 – 3 to Newton. Jason Holwerda provided a quality start, allowing just a run in 4 2/3 of an inning. Dillon Branderhorst hit a double and scored a run, and Kyle Sneller cracked his first varsity base knock of his career. PC softball is now 7 – 0 on the season, the boys drop to 2 – 3. Both teams are in action and on the road on Friday for games with Oskaloosa.
