The Marion County Republicans hosted an open forum this week to highlight the party’s candidates running for the presidency.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was one of two who attended in person, and fielded questions from moderator Dr. Bob Leonard and the audience about his policy plans. Before the U.S. Supreme Court announced on Friday their 5-4 vote that legalizes same-sex marriage nationwide, Huckabee addressed his stance on homosexuality. He says he has no problems with homosexuals as people, but feels that marriage is an institution rooted in divinity and should only take place between one man and one woman.
“I don’t accept the idea of a same-sex marriage not because I don’t like people, but because I believe the institution of marriage is very sacred and unique, that is not just a human institution, but a divine institution that reflects the very relationship between Christ and his church,” Huckabee said. “For me, that’s something I can’t deal with. It’s not a political issue for me, it’s a biblical issue.”
Huckabee and representatives from other campaigns also discussed other issues with potential voters.
